Die Before You Die

An odd title I will admit, but I tend to enjoy odd titles. Especially this one. The title actually comes from a quote by C.S. Lewis that says, “Die before you die; there is no chance after.”

For an average person, that quote seems rather odd, mysterious and almost creepy. But if you understand it, really know what it means, then it can change your life and really make you think.

In this hectic world that we live in, there are people of all different ethnic groups. Yet we all share the same thing: We all hate to be hated and love to be loved. You can’t deny it – it makes you happy when someone says you look nice, or that they want to hang out with you. It makes you feel loved, accepted.

It hurts when someone straight-out tells you they hate you, that they always have. It hurts when someone whom you had trusted, who you had thought was your best friend, turns their back on you and completely walks away.

Everyone in this world has been hurt before, and everyone has been loved at some point in their life. If not loved by anyone on this earth (which I highly doubt), then there’s always God who will always love and care for you.

But back to what I was saying: Everyone has been hurt in this world, and everyone’s going keep being hurt because that’s how this life is.

However, if people around the world try to live by C.S. Lewis’s quote “Die before you die…”, then the world could be a little better.

How? Let me explain.

When C.S. Lewis says, “Die before you die”, he’s referring to dying to yourself. Confused?

Man helping a child in a flood.

Dying to yourself simply means Putting Someone Else Above You. It means you are dying to your old self and saying that the person behind you can go first. You’re making yourself low and the other person high.

When C.S. Lewis says his quote, he’s simply saying, “Put everybody else above yourself. Let them go first before your life is ended on this earth. Once you die, there is no other chance to put people first anymore.”

Quite profound, is it not? I find it so.

We all need to put others before ourselves – Jesus did it, so can we.

When we put others before ourselves, we are dying to our old self, and our new self – the self that is made only new through knowing Jesus – is shining bright. When we die to ourselves, Jesus shines through us and people can see the love of Him in us.

We have this thing in our house that we call, “DTS”. My Dad actually came up with the three letters, and they stand for, “DIE TO SELF”. We will constantly refer to them in our home, and it’s a great reminder to put others before yourself every day.

As the old quote goes,

It’s very true. People are watching your every move, seeing if you are living up to what you say you are.

Make sure that your actions are backing up what your mouth is saying you believe.

Cheers!
