What Do You Find Your Identity In?

My family and I have recently been attending a house church that some friends go to. I have really enjoyed it, and wanted to share something that really stood out to me, one Sunday night.

One guy said something that really made me think. He said (paraphrasing here): “The world is telling you to find identity in the things around you. Whether it be money, your job, or what people think of you, the world tells us to find identity in things of this world. We, as Christians, however, need to stop trying to find identity in things of this world, and start finding identity in Jesus. He’s the only one that can satisfy us, the only One that can truly make us who we were meant to be.”

So, here’s my question for you all:

What Do You Find Your Identity In?

The definition for the word “Identity” is:

the fact of being who or what a person or thing is.

We become what we think, say or do the most of. If we are only focused on people liking us, then that is what we are going to find our identity in. But, if we focus on Jesus and serving Him, that is what we will find our identity in.

Do you find your identity in Jesus or do you find it in the things of this world? I know that, if I were to be truly honest with myself, I would say that I usually find my identity in the things around me. I find happiness in socializing. There’s not a problem with that, as long as I don’t let that be what defines my life, what I find my identity in.

The more we spend time with Jesus, the more our identity will be of Him.

Figure out what you find your identity in and remove it. Not completely. Not so much that you never do it anymore, but remove it enough so that you can find your identity in Jesus, instead. Change your focus so that your identity evolves around Jesus, and not around worldly desires.

From now on, I am going to try to find my identity wholly in Jesus. It’s going to be hard, but it’s worth it. I encourage you to try with me. Pray and ask Jesus to help you, and I’ll be right here, praying and working on it too. 😉

Cheers!

      2. LOL I feel you. It’s like, you know you probably shouldn’t, but then again, why care what other people think? So you do it anyways. XDD Story of my life.

  2. When I was younger (specifically, when I was in school, and when I was at the age I’m writing about now), I think my identity came from being a good student. School was the one thing I knew I was good at, and that people recognized me for being good at, so I pushed myself as hard as I could and took as many hard classes as I could, because that was the only way I felt like I could live up to who I was. My friend Rebekah was in the same math class as me when we started college, and she gave me a hard time for freaking out about our first final exam but then getting 99% on it. (Did you read about that?) As life went on, I learned more about my identity being in Jesus, but to be honest, I had a hard time shaking that desire to push myself in school as part of my identity. And sometimes I wished I had lightened up a little and had more life experiences with others.

Although, I suppose pushing myself to do well in school for the wrong reasons is a much better unhealthy habit to have developed than, say, drugs.
