Bright Side To Everything

I wanted to share something which has been placed on my heart to share. I was talking it over with a very good friend of mine and knew that I had to share it with y’all.

People these days say that they don’t like the winter because everything is dead and depressing. I’ve never understood that. I was born in Montana, where, every Christmas, you’re pretty much granted a white Christmas without even requesting it. White snowflakes cover the ground in the millions, and you’re surrounded by white in almost every direction that you look. White isn’t a dead color; it’s the start of colors.

Now, living in Oklahoma (and rarely having a single snow day), I still don’t find Winter to be dead and depressing. Sure, I have my depressing days, but I don’t blame it on the Winter.

How come? If you haven’t yet figured out, I am enraptured by the world around me. I can’t seem to get enough of this beautiful world which our amazing Creator formed. Thus, having said this, the next paragraph should make a bit more sense to you.

When I sit outside in the Winter evening, I draw my knees up to my chest, wrap my arms around my legs and close my eyes. The breeze blows my hair about and as I listen, I realize just how alive everything is, around me. Leaves scatter about in the evening air and coyotes howl in the distance, a pale moon shining over them.

I open my eyes, lift my head, and it’s almost a magical sort of feeling which flows through me. All about, the grey leaves seem to be hurling themselves at one another, as if in battle. Storm clouds brew overhead and the great Oak trees sway back and forth, as if in some sort of peril against the coming tempest. I stand up and the cold gale sweeps my hair across my face, blinding me from the chaos erupting all around. I push my hair aside and hold it back as I stand amidst the disarray. Darkness seems to envelope me from every side, yet the moon continues to cast its ray and all remains alive.

It’s the loveliest feeling, to be standing amidst all of this. Definitely one of my favorite pastimes. When I go about this, I can’t help but think of how alive the Winter is. How is all that I just describe, dead? Tell me how, please. I’d love to know your thoughts.

When we try to view the world around us in an optimistic state, we see things so much differently. If you view Winter as being dead and depressing, then guess what you’re going to feel like, during this season? Yup. Dead and Depressed, inside.

I’m sure that that isn’t what you want; after all, who enjoys feeling depressed, or seemingly dead, inside? No one. We all enjoy our happy moments. I have never met someone who wished they could be depressed. All of us treasure the happy memories which we have with the people we love.

Seeing the world around us in a better state doesn’t blind us from the truth; it simply creates a better attitude inside of us, towards the world.

There is already so much evil in the world; so many bad things happening. If we look at the simple things around us and find beauty in them where no one else seems able to, we create an optimistic state which is infectious and bubbles out to everyone else around us.

So, I encourage you today: Don’t find the bad in everything around you. Look for the beautiful; the good; the sweet. I know there are a lot of situations where it may seem like there is no hope. Yet you can still find the bright side. Everything has a bright side; we just have to look for it.

Ask God to help you, too. He’s always here for you; all you have to do is ask Him to help you. If anything, you can be thankful that you have an amazing God who sent His one and only Son to die on a cross for YOU! If you can’t find the bright side to anything, then realize what an awesome God we serve. He’s so amazing and I can’t even begin to explain how mesmerizing and wonderful He is to us.

Well, that’s my post for the day. I hope all of you enjoyed reading it and please let me know what you think, in the comments below.

Cheers!

  4. I’ve been thinking about this all day…..

I don’t like winter for a lot of reasons. It doesn’t snow here. Literally. The last time it snowed back where I grew up was 1963, and the last time it snowed where I lived now was 1976. I’ve never had a white Christmas. Winter means gray skies, and gray skies are just gloomy to me. But it’s not just about being depressed. Winter means dressing in layers, and clothes don’t fit me well in general, so everything is uncomfortable and doesn’t do a good job of keeping me warm. Winter means my hands get really cold and dry to the point of itching and bleeding pretty much all the time. Winter is when it rains here, and rain means all my senses are assaulted as I’m trying to walk and carry everything without getting it muddy or getting anything I’m carrying damaged by water, all while my face is being pelted with little cold bullets of water. And, both of the last two winters, rain has meant my roof leaking, which in turn means having my house torn up and thousands of dollars in repairs and my insurance going up. So that’s why I don’t like winter.

However, I agree with everything you say. I agree that there is good and beauty to be found in everything, even when winter makes me uncomfortable. It doesn’t snow here, but it does at high elevations, and on a clear day after a storm I can see snow on the high mountains to the east. And I’ve come to appreciate changing seasons in general over the years as I’ve grown up. It is nice for the weather to get warmer after months of cold, and it is nice for the weather to get colder after months of heat.

      1. It’s been okay so far… and I’ve learned some hard lessons through the experience. That’s important too.

      2. Yep, lessons usually come from hard experiences, and they teach us how to get through other difficult situations, later on.
